Burgundy: Bourgogne, Premier Cru, and Grand Cru

Burgundy: Bourgogne, Premier Cru, and Grand Cru

What does Bourgogne, Premier Cru, and Grand Cru mean?

If we were limited to only one red wine for the rest of our lives it would be Burgundy. It’s delicious and there’s an infinite amount of information to keep learning. In Burgundy there’s a class system for vineyards. It’s a bit like a city, there are neighborhoods which are more valuable than others for a variety of reasons. In Burgundy you can always count on that class system being apparent on the label.

Bourgogne Rouge and Bourgogne Blanc:

The most general one is called Bourgogne which just means Burgundy– it’s like the state. There’s New York and there’s New York City. There’s plenty of delicious wines labeled as such. Here are our favorites:

Premier Cru:

This is the silver medal. These are limited areas of land.

Grand Cru:

Simply put, this is the best house on the block.
