Balgera, Valtellina Riserva ‘Valgella’ 2002

Valtellina is a remote part of Northern Italy where you’ll find wines that fly under the radar. You’ll also find wines almost 20 years old that cost under $50. Balgera is a rustic producer, meaning their wines taste more like mushrooms and leather than jam and chocolate. The 2002 vintage is notoriously difficult outside of regions like Burgundy, Champagne… and Valtellina.

Here's what you should know about it:

  • This wine is a blend: Mostly nebbiolo, plus other varieties that don’t exist elsewhere.
  • Open it an hour before drinking.
  • 2002 is ready to drink now.
  • In Italian, a double L is pronounced as it is in English, rather than with the “jay” sound like in Spanish.
Things you actually said...

“Fantastic wine! Wonderful acidity balanced with light fruit. Some smokiness. Enjoyed with a light pasta dish. 91 points.”

“Had in York. Excellent.”

“Decanted for an hour—went with pork rib and beef n’ grits very well.”

As sommeliers, we often get asked, "What’s the best wine on the list?"
Rarely would we ever tell the truth. We wanted to hoard them for ourselves, or stash them away to drink with our sommelier friends in-the-know. Well, Parcelle Picks is our big reveal. This is our selection of the hard-to-find, ready-to-drink, sometimes well known, maybe obscure, and always limited wines we love most.
