There’s a small section of this giant hill where the towns of Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, and Chassagne-Montrachet all stack up on each other. Around them, there are a bunch of other small towns with hard names to pronounce which make White Burgundy too. Again, the only grape that matters is Chardonnay.
In these areas, you have some of the most expensive and arguably the greatest white wines in the world. This is the zone that we say represents White Burgundy best. The wines almost always spend a little bit of time in oak, have an inherent richness to them, and without trying to sound depressed, it’s dark and cold so the wines also have a ton of acidity. It’s a special place. It’s beautiful. And for a lot of different reasons, it’s simply the best.
A White Burgundy should always be: kind of rich in flavor, smell like apples and bread, and a few dollars more than what you would spend on other white wines.
