Praesidium, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva 2013
Abruzzo is a rugged place. Unlike most other regions in Italy which have some city, statue or a special type of food they can identify with, Abruzzo doesn’t really have that one special thing. The most commonly associate item for Abruzzo we like to think is Montepulciano, it's a big red wine that has become an international brand. For a long time, Montepulciano became the premium cheap wine. It was an inexpensive way to get a bold and rich wine. Today, there are a handful of producers who are trying to make a better version of Italy’s answer to Malbec. The best versions of Montepulciano are still big wines but they have a pronounced earthy flavor.
