Catherine & Pierre Breton, 'Beaux Monts' Chinon 2018

Cabernet franc aka cab franc is much like Prince Harry. It’s noble, hangs out in the vicinity of castles, it’s a little spicy, will never be ruler, and also lives in southern California. It’s most often blended with other grapes to give them freshness and a little extra edge of flavor, like seasoning a steak, or like dumping Tabasco all over your bland omelette in order to give it some life. In the Loire valley of France, where this wine is from, it’s the primary red grape. Here, its wild and rustic flavors are celebrated, especially from the old guard producers like Catherine and Pierre Breton. Their style is traditional, meaning that the wines lean towards tasting like chewing tobacco, Hatch green chiles, and some type of animal. If you’ve never had it, we recommend you try, even if only to find out if you hate it or not. We bet you won’t.
