Lapalu, 'Cuvée des Fous' Brouilly 2018

Nowadays, Beaujolais comes in many different flavors despite always being from the same grape: gamay. Some taste as sweet as Cherry Cola, while others could pass as kombucha. It’s a region where the producer has a lot of creative freedom in how they approach their winemaking, and thus the wines can taste vastly different. This wine from the small and natural producer Lapalu is like the Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer edition– It’s got all the added features. The vines are 80 years old, making it darker and more savory. It’s aged in oak barrels for 6 months so it has some structure allowing it to age. Finally: there’s no added sulfur or yeast, which bring out all the wild and earthy flavors possible from this grape. Just like when your parents dropped you off in that fly new SUV with leather seats and a car phone, you can be proud drinking this wine too.
