Bartolo Mascarello

Bartolo Mascarello, Barolo 2006

$349

This is one of the all-time great Barolos of Bartolo Mascarello. Intense and powerfully structured, it’s absolutely delicious right now, but it also has plenty of runway ahead.

Bartolo Mascarello is one of Piedmont’s truly iconic traditionalists, and their wines all the way back to the 1950s can be extraordinary. That said, the last 20 years - under the stewardship of Maria Teresa Mascarello - represent the best stretch they’ve ever had. The vineyards and winemaking techniques haven't changed, but the farming has improved, and Maria Teresa has brought her own unique touch. In the near-perfect 2006 vintage, she crafted a masterpiece.

Here's what you should know about it:
  • Bartolo Mascarello was a staunch traditionalist producer who made some of Barolo’s greatest ever wines.
  • His daughter, Maria Teresa, took over in the early ‘00s, and has produced an uninterrupted run of hits for the last 20 years.
  • 2006 is a benchmark vintage for Barolo. The powerhouse ‘06 Mascarello is a modern reference point.
