Dominique Lafon, Beaune Premier Cru 'Vignes Franches' 2019

Dominique Lafon has run things at the legendary Domaine des Comtes Lafon since the ‘80s. As if that’s not enough on his plate, he also began making wines under his own label in 2008. These bottlings may not have the same history, but they do have Dominique. Vignes Franches is his slightly spicy, particularly floral Red Burgundy. This is pinot noir at its silkiest and brightest.

Here's what you should know about it:
  • This wine is made with old-vine pinot noir from a premier cru vineyard in Beaune.
  • Dominique Lafon is best known for age-worthy white wines, but his reds, especially from vintages like 2019, offer fantastic value.
  • “Vignes Franches" translates to "free vines," dating back to a time when the vineyard was exempt from all taxes. Unfortunately, that’s no longer the case.
Things we actually said...

“Lafon is synonymous with rich, collectible White Burgundy. His reds fly under the radar, but consistently overdeliver.”
