Mas Jullien, Pays d’Herault Blanc 2020
Olivier Jullien isn’t in a marquee wine region - the Languedoc produces far more bad wine than good - and he doesn’t use well-known grapes or make straightforward wines. Perhaps that helps explain why Mas Jullien remains under the radar, despite being a go-to of sommeliers and collectors. But if you’re not familiar, just know that these wines are special, and are worth seeking out whenever you get the chance.
This is Mas Jullien’s only white wine. It comes from Olivier’s organic, high-elevation plots just inland from the Mediterranean. It has the richness and ripe fruit you might expect from this sun-kissed part of southern France, along with fresh acidity and mineral notes. It’s an ideal winter white without feeling at all heavy.
- Olivier Jullien makes singular wines in the Languedoc region of southern France. This is his only white wine.
- It’s a richly textured, nuanced white made from a blend of clairette and carignan blanc, along with chenin blanc, roussanne, and grenache blanc.
- Along with Grange des Peres and Mas de Daumas Gassac, Mas Jullien is on a very short list of the best producers in the Languedoc.
