Roagna, Barolo 'Pira' 2019

$210
$165

Roagna is one of Piedmont’s all-time greats. Over the last decade or so, Luca Roagna’s wines have become prettier and more approachable, without sacrificing the intensity and depth that his family’s nebbiolos are known for. This Barolo from the near-perfect 2019 vintage is a modern high-water mark for Roagna. It belongs in a lineup alongside recent classics from Bartolo Mascarello, Rinaldi, and Conterno.

Here's what you should know about it:
  • Roagna is one of the great old-school producers in Piedmont. Luca Roagna, the family’s 5th generation at the helm, has run the winery since the early ‘00s.
  • 2019 is an outstanding vintage for Barolo, rightfully compared to 2010 and 2016.
  • The Pira vineyard in Castiglione Falletto is owned entirely by Roagna. In 2019, it yielded this intense, earthy, classically aromatic Barolo.
