Simon Bize, Savigny-lès-Beaune Rouge 'Aux Grands Liards' 2019
$65
Simon Bize is arguably the most undervalued producer in Burgundy today. Their red wines are elegant and immediately enjoyable. When it comes to the village of Savigny-lès-Beaune, Bize is the name to know.
‘Aux Grands Liards’ was the first vineyard the Bize family ever owned, and it was the late Patrick Bize’s favorite bottling. It’s probably ours, too. From old vines and a hallmark vintage, this is a deep, earthy, peppery Red Burgundy.
Here's what you should know about it:
- The domaine has been making wine in Savigny-lès-Beaune for more than 140 years.
- Bize is a proponent of whole-cluster fermentation, which gives their red wines firmness and spicy, floral notes.
- 2019 is phenomenal vintage for Red Burgundy.
Things we actually said...
“The list of $65 Red Burgundy with this level of depth and up-front appeal is short. Like, maybe only one name, short.”

As sommeliers, we often get asked, “What’s the best wine on the list?”
