Jean-Michel Stephan is one of the few natural winemakers in the Northern Rhône, and one of a far smaller group who simultaneously appeals to serious collectors. His old-vine syrah is unmistakably Côte-Rôtie in its savory, peppery profile, yet it’s lithe and energetic in a way that brings to mind Beaujolais or the Loire. To be clear, that’s a very appealing combination.
