Antinori, 'Solaia' 1978
Inspired by the Sassicaia of Marchese Nicolo Incisa della Rochetta, their cousins, the Antinoris, bottled Tignanello primarily from sangiovese in 1971. Then 7 years later in the warmest part of their Chianti Classico estate, Piero Antinori flipped the blend to make Solaia mostly from cabernet sauvignon. It’s comparatively rich and more densely-fruited. The '78, the inaugural release, remains an all-time benchmark today.
