Auguste Clape, 'Renaissance' Cornas 2014

$85
A decade ago, Cornas was still somewhat of an insider’s wine. Auguste Clape, who passed away in 2018, was one of the pioneers of making craft wine in this region of the Northern Rhone Valley. The grapes here are all syrah—and they are some of the world's greatest examples. The wines are dense, peppery, and will age longer than any human. Clape's Renaissance label is made from younger vines, which are said to make wine that's easier to drink without aging. It's a bit fruitier, but still has the same herbaceous and wild flavors of the best syrah in the world.
