Benanti, 'Pietra Marina' Etna Bianco 2009

$155
Only a people as stubbornly prideful as Sicilians would choose to grow wine on the slopes of an active volcano—and we're happy they do. The white wines of Mount Etna, made from the grape carricante, are some of Italy's greatest and most distinct. They have brisk acidity and a saltiness that brings to mind the sea breeze that washes over the vines. The Benanti family has been making wines here for as long as anyone, and this bottle, their most prized, comes from a vineyard at the volcano's highest peak. Etna Bianco doesn't get better than this.
