Calabretta, Nerello Mascalese 'Vigne Vecchie' Etna 2011

Sicily is an island. Technically it's in Italy, but it’s closer to Africa than it is Rome. This keeps its culture, including its wine-making culture, distinct. Because of this, you'll find grapes in Sicily that you won't find anywhere else in the world. Nerello Mascalese is one of them. It grows on the ashy slopes of Mount Etna, the largest active volcano on the Mediteranean. The wine's flavors are informed by this--they are smokey, like a Volcano, and a little bit salty, like the Mediteranean shoreline. Calabretta is an all-organic producer and their wines taste like the place they are from rather than any specific wine making technique. And that's why we like them.
