Pierre Gonon, Saint-Joseph 2020

Brothers Jean and Pierre Gonon are the benchmark Saint-Joseph. While Saint-Joseph is typically thought of as the less age-worthy, more everyday alternative to Hermitage and Cote-Rotie, Gonon turns that stereotype on its head. Their organic syrah from the traditional heart of the village is dark-fruited and peppery yet fresh and floral, reminiscent of both the Northern Rhone and Burgundy. These wines have shot up in value in the last 5 years, and there’s no reason to think that will stop anytime soon.
