Gravner, Rosso 1998
The name Gravner to orange wine is what Kleenex is to tissues. He’s credited with bringing back macerated/skin contact/orange wine to Western Europe in the 1980s. However, in addition to those, he also produces a tiny quantity of red. Unlike the adventurous orange wines, the reds are classically flavored. The closest comparison are the great wines of Bordeaux, the really great stuff like Haut Brion, Lafite, you know it.
This is a blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot from 1998. 1998 is a particularly great year for these grapes in Italy. Sassicaia and Ornellaia produced their top wines of the decade. This is dense, earthy, and maybe the most rare wine we’ve offered to date.
