A trailblazing wine, Sassicaia is the seminal Supertuscan, and in many ways one of very few in that category that have stood the test of time. Mario Inchisa della Rochetta, along with his wife, planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc instead of the local Tuscan varieties, an attempt to emulate the great wines of Bordeaux. For the first 20 years, all the wine was consumed by the family and friends, but with the first commercially released vintage of Sassicaia 1968, an icon was born.
