What to Wines to Order at Noreetuh

What to Wines to Order at Noreetuh

In some ways, Noreetuh is unassuming. It’s a small spot in the East Village serving Hawaiian-leaning dishes like Spam musubi and kimchi fried rice, while pop and hip-hop alternate on the speakers. In other ways, Noreetuh is less modest. Spam musubi can be adorned with black truffles, or the Spam can be subbed out for Japanese scallops or Hokkaido uni. But even the ossetra caviar and foie gras terrine pale in comparison to the most eye-catching aspect of Noreetuh: the wine list, which is one of the most exciting in all of NYC.

Here are the best buys at Noreetuh. Pro-tip: If you want to bring your own bottle, they have no corkage fee on Sundays– just leave a tip like you bought the wine there.

Noreetuh Wine List

Bubbles

Dishes here range from mackerel crudo to chicken katsu and crab fried rice, and you’re going to want to try as many things as possible. The only wine that pairs with pretty much everything? Bubbly.

Bérêche, Extra Brut, Rive Gauche, Vallée de la Marne 2017

Ullyse Collin, Extra Brut, Les Pierrières, Blancs de Blanc, Congy NV

Peter Lauer, Brut Réserve, Riesling, Saar 1999

White Burgundy

Compared to the real estate devoted to German riesling, the wine list’s white Burgundy section is quite concise. But every single producer carries serious weight.

Henri Germain, Bourgogne Blanc 2019

Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey, Abbaye de Morgeots, Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru 2019

Joseph Colin, En Remilly, Saint-Aubin Premier Cru 2019

Sebastien Christophe, Fourchaume, Chablis Premier Cru 2020

Red Wine

While most of the menu lends itself to white or sparkling wine, you might want something that can stand up to the porterhouse, or you might simply be in the mood for some delicious red wine.

Wasenhaus, Spätburgunder, Baden 2019

Arnot-Roberts, Syrah North Coast 2011

Clos du Marquis, Saint-Julien 2005

Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier, Clos de la Maréchale, Nuits-St-Georges Premier Cru 2017

Riesling

Noreetuh has the best riesling selection in NYC. In fact, it’s reason enough to make a rez here as soon as possible.

Keller, Riesling Trocken, Von Der Fels, Rheinhessen 2020

Nikolaihof, Riesling, Steinriesler, Wachau 2007

Emrich-Schönleber, Trocken, Halgans, Nahe 2020

Off-Dry Riesling

The best time to dabble in off-dry riesling is when your food is spicy or salty or bitter, or as is often the case here, all of the above. And the best place in NYC to drink both young and old wines with some sweetness is Noreetuh.

Egon Müller, Scharzhof, Mosel 2020

J.J. Christoffel Erben, Spätlese*, Ürziger Würzgarten, Mosel 2004

Dönnhoff, Spätlese, Schloßböckelheimer Felsenberg 2002
