Not so long ago Nine Orchard St. was just an address that you’d receive at the last minute as the undisclosed location of tonight’s rave featuring Danny Tenaglia and lots of MDMA. Before that, it was a bank whose greatest achievement was the quality of the ornate ceiling they commissioned rather than their investments. In short, it was everything other than a place to drink a very nice bottle of wine with expertly prepared ‘simple’ food in a nearly perfect room. Today, thanks to a developer with good taste, a chef with some of the best food in NYC (Estela/Lodi/Cafe Altro Paradiso), and a service team deserving of awards, it’s officially the city’s best new place to eat, drink, and be seen.
Here’s what to find from wine director Watson Brown’s list.
What Wine to Order at Nine Orchard
There’s a heroic version of a seafood plateau. If you spent those kind of dollars on fish, you have a valid excuse to spend them on wine. Drink one of these:
Pierre Peters, Montjolys 2014
Château de Bonnezeaux, La Montagne, Coteaux du Layon
Vitovska, Edi Kante, Selezione, Friuli
Carricante, Benanti, Contrada Cavaliere, Etna, Sicily
If you eat burgers and steak au poivre by yourself at the bar, drink this:
Domaine Henri Gouges, Pruliers, Premier Cru 2013
Domaine Chave, Saint Joseph 2015
Stella di Campalto, Sasso Brunello di Montalcino 2016
The well priced trophy list:
Pierre Morey, Bourgogne Blanc 2019
Henri Germain, Meursault 2020
Dureuil-Janthial, Maizières, Rully, Côte Chalonnaise 2019
Domaine Dujac, Gruenchers, Premier Cru 2006
Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier, Chambolle Musigny 2019
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Grand Cru 2014
Salon 2007
