Domaine du Pélican, Arbois Trousseau 'Béranger' 2020

$95
Few names in the wine world carry the same weight as d’Angerville. Based in Volnay, the domaine is responsible for some of the most elegant and complex wines in Burgundy. An hour’s drive east in the Jura, Guillaume d’Angerville founded Domaine du Pélican in 2012. Just as d’Angerville does in Burgundy, they organically and biodynamically farm the region’s best vineyard sites - like Grand Curoulet and Béranger - before taking a hands-off approach in the winery. While they grow some chardonnay and pinot noir, Domaine du Pélican focuses on grapes native to the Jura, like savagnin, trousseau, and poulsard.

If the powers that be designated grand cru vineyards in the Jura, 'Béranger' would be the first name on the list. It used to be farmed by Jacques Puffeney, the so-called ‘pope of Arbois.’ Pélican’s trousseau from there is dark-fruited and earthy, with flavors of cranberry, clove, and fresh soil. No new oak is used so the flavors are exceptionally pure.
