Cerbaiona, Rosso VdT
In the fall of 2008, there was a lot of noise in the world about the housing crisis and the decline of the American economy. Meanwhile, in Italy, there was another national crisis. Winemakers in Tuscany were blending international grapes with the native sangiovese grape in Montalcino. It was so significant that it even has a Wikipedia page. The reason they were blending grapes like merlot and syrah into the wines was to give them an added richness of flavor and make them darker in color. Sangiovese on its own is a medium and tart wine that isn’t always crowd-pleasing for those that want something full-bodied.
One producer who did have international grapes planted decided to take another route. They would make an everyday drinking wine that was a blend both of grapes, and of different vintages. This is the Cerbaiona VDT Rosso— a blend of 2013 and 2015 vintages. We have no idea what grapes are actually in this, but it tastes great and it’s $20.
