Gattinara is a small town in the high mountains of Piedmont. Like the more famous towns of Barolo and Barbaresco, its speciality is the grape nebbiolo. But up here, because of the cooler climate and alpine terrain, the wines are more fresh than they are full. It’s sort of like a pop star's unplugged live performance as compared to their chart-topping radio hit. Petterino is a famous producer and is famously tiny—they don’t make much wine. But what they do make is built for the long haul, and somehow both powerful and light on its feet. This bottle tastes like tart fruit, dark chocolate, and roses.
