Brothers Jean and Pierre Gonon are the benchmark Saint-Joseph. While Saint-Joseph is typically thought of as the less age-worthy, more everyday alternative to Hermitage and Cote-Rotie, Gonon turns that stereotype on its head. Their organic syrah from the traditional heart of the village is dark-fruited and peppery yet fresh and floral, reminiscent of both the Northern Rhone and Burgundy. These wines have shot up in value in recent years, and there’s no reason to think that will stop anytime soon.
