Thibaud Boudignon makes some of our favorite chenin blanc in the Loire, or for that matter, anywhere else. The Bordeaux-born, Burgundy-trained winemaker set out on his own in 2009, and has since become one of the region’s unquestioned stars. His electric chenin brings to mind another biodynamic icon in Anjou, Stéphane Bernaudeau.
This wine comes from another village in the Loire called Savennières. Savennieres gets a lot of sunshine, and as a result, it yields particularly ripe and powerful expressions of chenin blanc. Clos de La Hutte is a tiny vineyard in the backyard of an abandoned monastery, just down the road from Nicolas Joly’s Coulée de Serrant. It’s deep and palate-coating yet salty, focused, and dry.
