Bernard Moreau, 'Chevalier-Montrachet' Grand Cru 2018 Magnum

$2,500
Bernard Moreau is like the Ralph Lauren of Burgundy: His wines aren't the cool new thing, but they're classic in a way that is increasingly rare and will likely never go out of style. Moreau's wines skew towards rich, but never lack vibrancy and clarity. He’s most closely associated with the great vineyards of Chassagne-Montrachet and the stellera grand crus of Chevalier-Montrachet and Batard Montrachet. Though most famous for his chardonnay's, he makes a small amount of earthy, elegant pinot too that, like all of Moreau’s wines, punches well above its weight.

2017 is a good bet if you like slightly leaner styles of white Burgundy, particularly when guided by Bernard Moreau’s light touch. A little known secret is that winemakers often save their best barrels of wine for large-format bottles like this, so a bottle like this is sure to be a treat at your next party. Just make sure you really like the invitees.

Notes on the Vintage: 2017 is perfectly in the middle, with neither the excess of ‘cold’ or ‘hot’ vintages. Generally speaking, the wines are ready to go today.
