When it comes to the wines of Galicia, most conversations center around albarino from Rias Baixas or mencia from Ribeira Sacra. Far, far rarer are any mentions of wines from Monterrei. Jose Luis Mateo is working to change that. In this rugged, mountainous region near the Portuguese border, Jose Luis makes a range of fresh, organic wines from obscure local grape varieties. This white wine - a blend of dona blanca, verdello, and treixadura - is rich without being at all oaky.
Tastes like: Yellow apple, jasmine, brioche.
How to drink: Chilled with shellfish, paella, or linguine with clams.
