Any conversation around the best riesling producers in the Mosel has to include Schloss Lieser. To be fair, that wasn’t always the case. But since Thomas Haag took over the historic estate in the late ‘90s, serious upgrades to both farming and winemaking have yielded world-class riesling.
Thomas Haag declined to take over his family’s iconic winery, Fritz Haag, in 2004, and instead opted to continue running Schloss Lieser with his wife Ute. Their rieslings tend to be more powerful and ripe than the lean and delicate style often found in the region, though they still have plenty of precision and crisp acidity. That’s all on display in this dry riesling from the Grand Cru vineyard at the heart of the estate.
