When it comes to the wines of Galicia, most conversations center around albarino from Rias Baixas or mencia from Ribeira Sacra. Far, far rarer are any mentions of wines from Monterrei. Jose Luis Mateo is trying to change that. In this rugged, mountainous region near the Portuguese border, Jose Luis makes fresh, organic wines unadorned with oak. This velvety, medium-bodied red wine is a blend of familiar (tempranillo) and super esoteric (mouratón) grape varieties native to Monterrei.
Tastes like: Blackberry, lavender, bay leaf, white pepper.
How to drink: Alongside pretty much anything on the grill at a summer cookout.
