Vinho Verde gets a bad rap. Well, actually, that’s not right. Most of it isn’t very good. The wines of Joana Santiago are notable exceptions. On her family’s farm, surrounded by olive trees and nearly 100 varieties of fruits, she farms albarino (alvarinho in Portugal) a stone’s throw from the Spanish border. Her single-vineyard white wine is citrusy and crisp, with depth and texture rarely found in Vinho Verde.
Tastes like: Lemon zest, peach, sea salt, chamomile.
How to drink: Cold with oysters, fish tacos, or salty snacks.
