Terre Porziane, Colle Gaio 2013 (Pre-Sale Arriving 10/8)

The Colle Gaio of Antonio Pulcini has cult-status among Italian wine insiders. The reasons are many: unique farming and production methods, tiny volumes, releases debuting with decades of age, a reclusive winemaker who sells allocations primarily from the cellar’s front door, and the list goes on. But the takeaway is this: if you enjoy the iconic whites of Miani, Valentini, or Gravner, then this is a rare opportunity to try another singular Italian white wine.

Here's what you should know about it:
  • This skin-contact white wine is made from the Malvasia del Lazio grape in volcanic soils overlooking Rome.
  • It’s made by Antonio Pulcini, who works in an ancient villa that once belonged to the sister of the Roman Emperor in the 1st century A.D. Pulcini sells the majority of production from the cellar’s front door.
  • He keeps yields in his vineyard lower than those of grand cru White Burgundy. He then gives the wine a few days of skin contact, before aging it for years in tank, and years (or decades) more in bottles covered in sand.
  • The result is a rich, savory, exceptionally age-worthy white wine.
