Syrah from Côte-Rôtie can be polarizing due to its intense savory character, and as a result, many producers have shied away from that overt meatiness in favor of more restrained, familiar flavors. Bernard Levet is not one of those producers. His wines are powerful, age-worthy, and unapologetically Côte-Rôtie. ‘La Chavaroche’ is from old vines on the Côte Brune, and only a tiny amount makes it to the US each year.
Tastes like: Grilled plums, bacon fat, olives, violets.
How to drink: Decant for an hour or more, and enjoy with a ribeye or bacon cheeseburger.
