The late, great Jacky Blot belongs in the pantheon of the Loire’s all-time legends. His single-vineyard whites didn’t just open people’s eyes to Montlouis, but they spurred a move towards complex, mineral, age-worthy chenin blanc in general. Made naturally without any makeup and aged in barrel, this has the kind of texture and site-specificity typically associated with high-end White Burgundy. The ‘Clos Michet’ comes from a south-facing plot of limestone, yielding a chenin that’s simultaneously ripe-fruited and elegantly detailed.
Tastes like: Yellow apple, honeysuckle, biscuits, hazelnut.
How to drink: Chilled with brie or rich seafood dishes, like seared sea scallops with garlic butter.
