Fichet, Bourgogne Aligoté 2018

Aligoté is the kind of wine a vineyard worker drinks for refreshment after a long, hot day picking grapes in Burgundy. Since you probably don’t grow grapes you should reach for a bottle like this to cool off after any old long day. Great White Burgundy growers usually make a great aligoté that, because of the grape’s relative obscurity, flies under the radar. For those in the know, however, aligoté has developed a sort of hip cachet, as it represents a more subtle and understated luxury, like buying a Saint Laurent cardholder instead of a flashy bag. Jean-Phillipe Fichet is one of the most conscientious makers of White Burgundy today, and his aligoté comes from vines just outside his prime, organic vineyards in Meursault. This wine is crisper and less oaky  than chardonnay, though still has a comforting weight. It tastes more like rocks than it does fruit, and is lively and bright.
