When it comes to the wines of Galicia, most conversations center around albarino from Rias Baixas or mencia from Ribeira Sacra. Far, far rarer are any mentions of wines from Monterrei. Jose Luis Mateo is trying to change that. In this rugged, mountainous region near the Portuguese border, Jose Luis makes a range of fresh, organic wines from obscure local grape varieties. This white wine - a blend of dona blanca, verdello, and treixadura - is rich without being at all oaky.
Tastes like: Yellow apple, honeycomb, toasted bread, jasmine.
How to drink: Chilled but not cold with grilled fish, chicken and chorizo paella, or linguine with clams.
