Weingut Velich, Burgenland 'TO' 2021
Southeast of Vienna in the Austrian region of Burgenland, Helmut Velich planted vines in 1959. Helmut thought he was planting pinot blanc, but fortunately, the vines turned out to be chardonnay, which were ideal for the area’s limestone soils. His sons, Heinz and Roland, took over in the ‘90s, and have gone on to become highly revered figures in the Austrian wine scene. Heinz makes this chardonnay-based bottling from the estate’s younger vines. It’s a medium-bodied, juicy fruited, aromatic white wine.
Tastes like: Pineapple, lemon curd, thyme, honeysuckle.
How to drink: Chilled but not too cold, with cooked white fish or a cheese board.
