G.B. Burlotto, Langhe Freisa 2021

G.B. Burlotto is a Barolo legend. Their single-vineyard bottlings, led by ‘Monvigliero’, are some of Italy’s very best wines. And as you’d imagine, they’re also among the most expensive. Lesser known, but offering arguably more value for the money, are Burlotto’s wines meant for everyday enjoyment. Made from grapes like barbera, dolcetto, and even sauvignon blanc, these are wines we’d open every night, if not for the fact that we only receive tiny quantities each year.

Leave it to the exceptionally talented Fabio Alessandria (great-great-grandson of G.B. Burlotto) to make such a layered, compelling wine from freisa. This is darker and deeper than the barbera, but still bright and versatile with food. Unfortunately, Fabio makes this in extremely limited quantities from a single plot of land.
