In the Olympics of chillable red wines, France is represented by gamay, Italy offers up frappato, and Germany rests its hopes on spätburgunder. However, they’ll all have trouble reaching the podium ahead of Austria’s entrant: blaufränkisch. One of the parent grapes of gamay, blaufränkisch yields spicy, high-toned reds that are beautifully perfumed and highly versatile with food. Hannes Schuster, who took over for his mother, Rosi, in 2007, crafts this benchmark example of blaufränkisch from organic vines in Burgenland.
