Domaine Christophe et Fils, Chablis 'Montée de Tonnerre' 2021
$50
In his early 20’s, Sebastien Christophe started out with an acre of average vineyard land in Chablis. Fast forward a couple decades, and Sebastien’s hand-harvested grapes now come from some of the most renowned sites in the region. At the top of the pyramid are his premier cru holdings, the best of which is Montée de Tonnerre. From it, he makes this wine that’s rich and textured, but still crisp, salty, and perfect with seafood.
Here's what you should know about it:
- Sebastien Christophe is part of a wave of producers striving to make Chablis that’s deep and concentrated rather than simply citrusy and refreshing.
- ‘Montée de Tonnerre’ is the greatest premier cru in Chablis.
- It’s famously helmed by Raveneau. One bottle of Raveneau ‘Montée de Tonnerre’ goes for the same price as a case of this wine.
Things we actually said...
“Chablis has boatloads of pleasant wine, and it has a bit of extraordinary wine. A handful of producers are now making wine priced like the former but styled like the latter. Sebastien Christophe is one of them.”

As sommeliers, we often get asked, “What’s the best wine on the list?”
