Giacomo Conterno, Barbera 'Francia' 2020
$80
Barbera doesn’t get any better than this. Not only is it made by one of the world’s greatest red winemakers, but it comes from a vineyard that yields the most collectible (and expensive) wines in all of Italy.
While most barbera is bright, floral, and best consumed upon release, this is a more serious proposition. Thanks to extended barrel aging, a legendary vineyard, and Roberto Conterno’s traditionalist winemaking, this barbera has richness, structure, and deep earthiness rarely found outside of the region’s top Barolos.
Here's what you should know about it:
- Roberto Conterno is the greatest producer in Barolo, and his ‘Monfortino’ is Barolo’s greatest wine.
- Like this barbera, ‘Monfortino’ comes from the ‘Francia’ vineyard.
- One bottle of ‘Monfortino’ costs as much as a case of this barbera.
Things we actually said...
“Most barbera is good pizza wine and not much else. Conterno’s Barbera is great pizza wine and so much else.”

As sommeliers, we often get asked, “What’s the best wine on the list?”
