Vigneti Massa, 'Monleale' Barbera Colli Tortonesi 2014
There are two types of people in this world: those who wait in line for a fancy cup of coffee and those who think waiting in line for coffee is stupid. Think of barbera wines like coffee– there’s a lot of it made, it’s always satisfying, and there are a couple of examples that if your grandparents knew the price you paid they would revoke any inheritance that was coming your way because you’re too lavish. Aged Massa barbera is the one you wait in line for, and normally it is lavishly priced. Today it’s not, so no one will look stupid.
Massa is an artisan winemaker from a remote part of Northern Italy neighboring Barolo. He makes both white and red from only the regional grapes. When aged, it tastes like an earthy Burgundy and becomes lighter with flavors of Cherry Coke, liquorice, and roses.
- Monleale is the name of this blend. It’s aged for 2 years to create a deeper flavor.
- This is aged in the same barrel size as Burgundy. It’s inspired by those wines.
- If you were to live in the hills of Northern Italy, there are two things you would never do: wait in line for coffee, nor deny yourself a glass of Massa barbera at any time of day.

Call it a hit list, a daily deal, or whatever you like. It’s the best stuff we have right now—and at the best prices.
